The industry race for the best smart watch
It’s getting to that time of year… the shops are starting to play a selection of all too familiar songs, markets selling glühwein and bratwurst are springing up left, right and centre and suddenly it has become socially acceptable to wear a reindeer onesie (complete with antlers) in public!
But most importantly it is gift season; at no other time of year do people collectively both give and receive so much. So, in the true spirit of the season, I have been thinking… For someone who is actively seeking new ways to bring digital to both my personal and financial life, what is this year’s must have Christmas gift?
For the smart tech industry, 2013 has been defined by one thing: The Smart Watch. All the major technology firms have been racing to create and then outdo one another with their smart watches. This year already we have seen the launch of the Pebble watch, Samsung’s Galaxy Gear, The Sony SW2, even Adidas has created its own to add to the mix.
Smart technology has already brought the world to our fingertips and now services such as banking have been brought into our homes. The creation of the smart watch will bring this closer still.
With digital banking celebrating its 30th anniversary last month and smart watch banking being all over the news recently, naturally my thoughts for the perfect Christmas gift turned to an item which would allow me to make phone calls, get notifications and even check the weather. Most importantly, however, it could be a valuable step on my digital banking journey, especially now apps that allow balance and transaction checks on smart watches are currently being developed.
So will a new smart watch be number one on my Christmas list for this year? Perhaps.
2014 promises great things in smart watch innovation, with upgrades for the Pebble and the Galaxy Gear. Both Apple and Google are set to bring out their highly anticipated first models, with Apple bringing on board executives from the likes of Burberry and Yves Saint Laurent to ensure its smart watch will be the height of chic.
So come Christmas 2014, when the smart watch has had time to fulfil all of its early promise, I will only be asking for one thing… Because with the prospect of owning a piece of technology that is both phone, diary and bank, all neatly packaged into a shell that is both sleek and stylish, small enough to wear around my wrist, who could ask for more?
